Indonesia’s Failure to Host the U-20 World Cup, Abdul Mu’ti Emphasizes Unity and Encourages Reform of PSSI
MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – FIFA has officially stripped Indonesia as host of the Under-20 World Cup. The readiness of the venue, the controversy of the arrival of the Israeli national team, and the mishandling of the Kanjuruhan tragedy are presumed as the reasons of the recall.
Responding to FIFA’s decision, the General Secretary of Muhammadiyah, Abdul Mu’ti, called on all parties not to blame each other and to maintain unity.
“Everyone should respond to FIFA’s decision to cancel Indonesia as the host of the U-20 World Cup calmly and rationally. Despite the pros and cons, the Indonesian government and the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) tried their best, but the final decision was FIFA’s. Thus, it isn’t necessary to blame each other,” said Mu’ti on Thursday (30/3).
Mu’ti said that being the host of the U-20 World Cup would certainly make Indonesia proud; indeed, it would enable the Indonesian national national team to qualify without going through the qualification. Nevertheless, Indonesia’s removing to be the host, everyone should bear in their mind that the unity of this nation is vital.
“In fact, Indonesian will soon welcome a political year of 2024,” said Mu’ti.
According to Mu’ti, Indonesia’s strip to host the U-20 World Cup becomes an essential lesson for the PSSI to reform to be able to compete with other countries.
“What is urgent and equally crucial is to improve Indonesia’s football, so the Indonesian national team can qualify in the World Cup. Although it is not equal, qualifying in the World Cup is something to be proud of as being the host,” said Mu’ti.
