MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MEDAN – The Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Syafiq A. Mughni mentioned that Muhammadiyah vision of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam) is reflected in how Islam serves as a religion that benefits the entire community, without any exception.
Muhammadiyah’s approach to community service is firmly rooted in the Quran and Sunnah. The movement draws guidance from these sacred texts to ensure that its endeavors align with the principles of Progressive Islam. Syafiq emphasized that the benefits extended by Muhammadiyah should be wide-ranging and comprehensive, encompassing all aspects of society without exception.
Syafiq eloquently described Progressive Islam within the Muhammadiyah context as a form of Islam that embodies tolerance, humanism, and a relentless pursuit of human dignity. It upholds fundamental human rights with an expansive and flexible mindset, guided by an open heart.
“Our struggle is for the advancement of all, not just Muhammadiyah, not just Muslims, not just the progress of Indonesian people and the nation, but for the international community as well,” said Syafiq in the commencement of the Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatra Utara (UMSU) on Tuesday, July 9.
Furthermore, Syafiq A. Mughni explained that Muhammadiyah commitment to serving society without exception stems from the profound teachings of Progressive Islam. This progressive Islamic perspective is firmly anchored in the principles of tawhid (oneness of God). Tawhid fosters unwavering commitment, strong morality, and profound spiritual consciousness.
Drawing upon the rich wisdom of the Quran, Progressive Islam emphasizes the importance of moral and spiritual teachings. It also places a strong emphasis on a relentless drive towards the establishment of an advanced civilization. These ideals are the driving force behind Muhammadiyah’s progressive Islamic movement.
“We nurture these principles through ijtihad (independent reasoning) and tajdid. Muhammadiyah continuously engages in deep thought and reflection. We never cease in our tireless efforts to advance society and the nation,” said Syafiq.
Progressive Islam unequivocally advocates for moderation, rejecting extremism and violent actions that threaten to disrupt harmony, tranquility, and peace within society.
Syafiq highlighted the emphasis on compassion Progressive Islam, aligning with the Quranic portrayal of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (mercy to the whole world).
