MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANTUL – Vice Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Council for Publication and Information Widyastuti stated that literacy is more than just reading books. It is about creating dynamic spaces for learning and inspiration. She mentioned the role of libraries, museums, and other literacy centers in transforming into “Taman Pustaka”, engaging literacy hubs that foster a culture of learning.
One of the tangible examples is the Muhammadiyah Museum, which becomes a historical and educational space. The museum preserves the legacy of Ahmad Dahlan and his efforts in building civilization through literacy. Its collection includes historical artifacts such as a globe, Al-Ma’un calligraphy, and portraits of early leaders of Muhammadiyah. These exhibits provide valuable insights into Muhammadiyah contributions to the development of this nation.
Widyastuti emphasized the critical role of literacy in Muhammadiyah history. As early as 1920, Ahmad Dahlan established education, da’wa, and literacy as the movement’s foundational pillars. Even before Indonesia’s independence, Muhammadiyah had been actively promoting literacy as an instrument for social progress.
In 1923, Muhammadiyah founded a library that played a key role in promoting a reading culture within the community. This initiative was later expanded by Aisyiyah, which introduced the concept of “Taman Pustaka” or “Pojok Pustaka” in the 1930s.
“Taman Pustaka is more than just a reading space; it is a community hub that nurtures a love for knowledge and learning,” said Widyastuti at the Muhammadiyah Corner (MuhCor) Fest 2024 on Saturday, January 25.
She highlighted the importance of reimagining libraries as vibrant and interactive spaces. “Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah libraries should not only be quiet reading areas but also social spaces where people can learn, discuss, and develop their creativity,” she added.
Widyastuti also encouraged students and academics to embrace the “Taman Pustaka” concept, ensuring that libraries and museums remain engaging, productive, and reflective of Muhammadiyah values. She hopes these spaces will inspire learning and drive social change.
MuhCor Fest 2024 became a crucial moment to reflect on Muhammadiyah longstanding commitment to education and literacy. The movement continues to dedicate itself to advancing the nation through education, literacy, and social transformation.
