MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti emphasized that the key to improving education quality lies in the competence of teachers. He stated that ensuring teachers have the necessary skills and qualifications is a top priority.
“One of our main policies is to improve the academic qualifications of teachers across Indonesia. Currently, more than 249,000 teachers have yet to obtain a D4 (diploma) or S1 (bachelor’s) degree,” said Mu’ti in the graduation ceremony for the Teacher Professional Education Program at Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) on Saturday, February 2.
To address this issue, the government will provide financial assistance starting in 2025 for teachers who have not yet met the minimum qualification requirements. This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with accredited universities.
Beyond academic qualifications, the ministry plans to intensify teacher training programs. These programs will not only enhance subject knowledge but also strengthen teachers’ roles as mentors and guides for their students.
“Teachers are not just educators in the classroom. They should also become role models, motivators, and sources of inspiration, helping students navigate life’s challenges,” Mu’ti added.
A quality education system is not solely measured by academic performance but also by students’ well-being. Teachers play a crucial role in creating a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable and engaged.
As part of this initiative, teachers will receive specialized training to support students’ emotional and social development. They are expected to act as both mentors and second parents, providing guidance beyond academics.
The ministry believes that investing in teachers will have a lasting impact on the overall education system. With well-trained and highly qualified teachers, Indonesia can nurture a generation that is both knowledgeable and of strong character.
These policies align with the national vision of developing high-quality human resources. The government remains committed to supporting teachers through various competency-building and welfare programs.
Through these strategic measures, the MInistry of Primary and Secondary Education aims to strengthen Indonesia’s education system and enhance its global competitiveness. Teachers will continue to play a vital role in shaping the future of the nation.
