Indonesia: A Blessed Nation with a Greater Responsibility

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, LAMONGAN – Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Saad Ibrahim stated that Indonesia has been described as a piece of paradise on earth.

Saad cited an Egyptian scholar who visited Indonesia in the 1960s and was captivated by its natural beauty. He explained that Indonesia aligns with the concept of Baldah Thayyibah, a land that is good and prosperous.

“Physically, Indonesia already fits the definition of Baldah Thayyibah,” said Saad in the preaching at Universitas Muhammadiyah Lamongan (UMLA) on March 8.

However, Saad emphasized that natural wealth alone is not enough. Many countries have similar geographic advantages, but true prosperity goes beyond physical beauty. A nation should also uphold moral and spiritual values to achieve Baldah Thayyibah wa Rabbun Ghafur ([Yours is] a good land and a forgiving Lord).

According to Saad, national leadership should not focus solely on economic growth or preserving Indonesia’s natural beauty, as these are gifts from God. Instead, leadership should also foster religious and ethical values to ensure not just material progress but also spiritual fulfillment.

Saad warned that even the most prosperous nations can fall if they neglect their moral responsibilities. He referenced the Kingdom of Saba’, which was once considered a Baldah Thayyibah but was ultimately ruined due to its people’s disobedience and ingratitude.

With Indonesia already meeting the physical definition of Baldah Thayyibah, Saad urged the nation to seek Allah’s mercy and guidance.

“Our duty now is to strive for Maghfirah (forgiveness) so that Indonesia remains not only a prosperous nation but also one blessed with Allah’s grace,” said Saad.
