MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Prophet Muhammad’s message was a powerful force of change, transforming a society plagued by ignorance into a thriving civilization.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir explained that, before Islam, society was marked by idol worship, the oppression of women, violent conflict resolution, and exploitative economic practices like usury. However, Islam brought a complete transformation, turning Medina into an enlightened city that later helped shape global civilization, even influencing Western modernity.
“Religion is not just about rules and rituals. Islam was sent to transform civilization,” said Haedar in a virtual iftar gathering with the Department of Radiology, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Friday, March 14.
Beyond societal change, Islam also focuses on spiritual growth. Haedar highlighted that fasting, for instance, is more than just skipping meals. It is a practice of self-discipline that engages the heart, mind, and actions to develop greater piety.
Haedar stated that fasting should not be reduced to simply enduring hunger and thirst. Instead, it should be a means of self-control and moral refinement. Quoting Imam Al-Ghazali, Haedar explained that there are different levels of fasting. While most Muslims observe it at a basic level, “mindful fasting” involves full awareness of one’s physical and spiritual state.
“Mindful fasting means being fully aware of our body, soul, and intentions, allowing us to experience a true transformation. It helps us maintain a pure heart (kalbun salim), a sound mind (ahlu salim), and righteous behavior,” said Haedar.
Haedar hoped that the spiritual transformation gained from fasting will not only benefit individuals but also become a foundation for spreading goodness to others. He emphasized that a Muslim’s presence should always leave a positive impact, whether through major contributions or small, consistent acts of kindness that help build a better society.
