Muhammadiyah Response to Food Crisis

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Agung Danarto stated that food and water become two of the most crucial resources for humanity now and in the future. Referring to verses 24 and 25 of Surah ‘Abasa, Agung emphasized that these verses highlight the importance of food and rainwater, making them especially relevant to today’s global challenges.

Agung stressed that the Qur’an is not only a sacred religious text but also a guide for life. He pointed out that its teachings go beyond religious laws, offering practical direction for human wellbeing.

“One example is Surah Abasa, verses 24 and 25. These verses are very relevant to the current and future problems humanity is facing. Food issues become a major challenge, and in the future, they could even trigger wars between countries,” said Agung in the kick off of the First National Jamboree of Muhammadiyah Farmer Association (Jamnas I JATAM) at the Muhammadiyah headquarters, Yogyakarta on Thursday, May 22.

In response to this, Muhammadiyah, through the Muhammadiyah Council for Community Empowerment and related partners, is encouraging efforts to build food sovereignty, ensuring that the country can meet its own food needs first.

“Food sovereignty must be pursued and continuously fought for. The work done by the Council for Community Empowerment and JATAM is an effort to ensure food is available and sufficient, not only for people but also for all living beings,” said Agung.

Agung noted that based on recent data, Indonesia’s current food reserves could only last for less than a month. If food production were to stop due to conflict or natural disasters, the result could be a widespread hunger crisis.
