MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – President of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Haedar Nashir called for an end to the ongoing conflict and suffering in Palestine. Speaking at the launch of the Unified Global Hijri Calendar (UGHC) at Universitas ‘Aisyiyah Yogyakarta (UNISA) on June 25, Haedar emphasized that all people, especially Muslims. must support peace and justice for Palestine.
“The suffering of our Palestinian brothers and sisters must come to an end. Ending this conflict requires collective support, particularly from Muslims who carry the mission of being a mercy to the world,” said Haedar.
However, Haedar also acknowledged the difficulty Muslims often face in uniting on major issues.
“There are two things Muslims struggle to agree on, support for Palestine and the Hijri calendar,” he said with a hint of humor.
Haedar expressed hope that the launch of UGHC could be a step toward greater unity in the Muslim world, not only in organizing religious observances but also in standing together for justice.
“We have always voiced and will continue to voice our support for a free Palestine. Every act of oppression will eventually meet its end,” said Haedar.
Muhammadiyah support for Palestine goes beyond statements. The organization has consistently provided humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, and other essentials, as well as educational scholarships for Palestinian children.
Haedar also praised the Indonesian government’s long-standing support for Palestine, saying, “Since the founding of Indonesia, the government has supported Palestinian independence and the support will remain until Palestine is free.”
The Palestinian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Zuhair Al-Shun, expressed his gratitude to Muhammadiyah and Indonesia for their ongoing support. He personally thanked Haedar and asked him to continue encouraging Muhammadiyah volunteers who are actively helping Palestinians.
“Your support has never stopped. We hope Muhammadiyah commitment stays strong, especially in the hearts of the volunteers in the field,” said Zuhair.
Looking to the future, Zuhair Al-Shun also encouraged Muhammadiyah to continue offering scholarships for Palestinian students to study at Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah universities.
“We are truly grateful to Muhammadiyah. We hope this strong partnership continues,” wished Zuhair Al-Shun.
