MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANDUNG – Islamic civilization (khairu ummah) will occur if the people cease to argue with one another. They have to begin to transform into more fundamental and long-term oriented issues.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir quoted surah Al-Hasyr verse 18, mentioning to let every soul look what deeds it has sent forth for tomorrow and have a fear of Allah.
“O believers! Be mindful of Allah and let every soul look to what ˹deeds˺ it has sent forth for tomorrow. And fear Allah, ˹for˺ certainly Allah is All-Aware of what you do,” said Haedar quoting Al-Hasyr verse 18.
According to Imam Ahmad’s history, the verse was recited by Prophet Muhammad when meeting the poor Mudhar people. The Prophet was sad seeing their condition until the Anshar people came.
“The Qur’an mentions Muslims do not live under the poverty line. Muslims are not marginal, are not cleft behind, and don’t have small traditions. Muslims have a great tradition,” Haedar said.
The verse emphasizes life and afterlife visions and encourages Muslims to excel in those two lives. The character is part of piety.
“The word tanadhar (look) future or the hereafter should be linked with our future in the world. It is equivalent to piety, which doesn’t always refer to fear but also vigilance in life,” Haedar said.
Thus, civilization cannot be built by debating domestic aspects such as the way of eating, drinking, and dressing. The people may commence designing long-term philosophical and practical strategies.
“The issues of how to eat, how to drink, how to dress should no longer have been a debate among Muslims. Don’t think they are new anymore, and keep arguing about them. When we fuss about how to eat, drink, and dress, other people think about how to go to the moon. For example, Elon Musk is now thinking about how to build a colony on Mars, while we are fussing about khilafiyah and misleading each other between Islamic groups. It seems like just meeting is a problem,” he said.
“If our position is still there, we will not become khairu ummah,” he said.
