Kiai Dahlan, The Living Qur’an

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, GRESIK – Muhammadiyah’s success with thousands of institutions (AUM) is the result of religious practice by its founder, K.H. Ahmad Dahlan.

Kiai Dahlan believed the Qur’an is the Sunnah, not only as evidence (dalil) but also as guidance (hidayah). He implemented verses of Al-Qur’an in real life and used them as guidance for its movement.

Therefore, the Chair of Muhammadiyah Council for Tabligh Fathurrahman Kamal said that it is not exaggerating to call Kiai Dahlan “the Living Qur’an” due to the history of Kiai Dahlan’s journey in establishing Muhammadiyah and his personal life.

“When I read his history, I see him as the living Qur’an,” Fathurrahman said on Sunday (5/2).

Fathur said that, if Muslims perform the command to pray but have not yet practiced the consequences of prayer, they only place the Qur’an as dalil. However, if their prayer can prevent them from bad, the Qur’an is only as guidance.

Kiai Dahlan’s religious practice to run his life was also applied to drive Muhammadiyah. Al-Qur’an and religious values became his guidance in managing himself, his family, and his organization.

In the context of family, the implementation of Al-Qur’an is on the attention of a husband to his spouse and children to prevent them from doing bad deeds.

Besides, a command not to divide is also part of the commands of Allah and the Messenger of Allah. Thus, it requires a commitment of all Muslims to preserve the unity and the life of the nation.

“In the context of social life and da’wa, Muslims must always refer to Al-Qur’an and Sunnah. However, dynamics of division in society is contrast to a condition that some people encourage to uphold teachings of Qur’an and Sunnah, but they also often trigger the division,” Fathur said.
