Ongoing Military Clashes in Sudan, Indonesian Students are Evacuated

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SUDAN – Clashes between Sudan’s military and the country’s main paramilitary force of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Khartoum on Saturday morning (15/4). The political conflict affects the Muhammadiyah Special Branch (PCIM) of Sudan.

The Sudanese military urged people not to leave their homes at night because warplanes conduct sweeps looking for troops from the RSF.

A member of the PCIM of Sudan mentioned that the blaze was seen from areas of the International University of Africa.

Indonesian students in Sudan will soon be evacuated to save them from the clashes.

“IUA students living in dorms have been evacuated since they stay next to the RFS camp,” said the PCIM member.

Besides, Indonesian students in the Khartoum International Institute for Arabic Language (KIIFAL) have been evacuated in the area around Makmuroh.

The Indonesian Student Association (PPI) of Sudan and the Indonesian Student Association of IUA cooperated with the Indonesian Embassy in Khartoum to provide logistic supply for the students.

For information, the dispute between the two sides came to the surface on Thursday when the army said recent movements by the RSF had happened without coordination and were illegal, with their rift centering around a proposed transition to civilian rule.

Fighting broke out in Khartoum early Saturday with gunfire and bombs heard near the army headquarters and presidential palace, according to an Anadolu reporter in Khartoum.

The RSF, for its part, claimed that it had taken control of Khartoum airport and Merowe military base in northern Sudan.

Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021 when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency in a move decried by political forces as a “coup.”
