‘Qoryah Toyyibah’, Aisyiyah’s Answer to Reduce Divorce and Gender-based Violence Rates

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Divorce and gender-based violence rates have risen over time. Due to the increasing number, Aisyiyah and Nasyiatul Aisyiyah provide an answer to the issue.

Economic factors are the leading cause of divorce, followed by early marriage or child marriage, and women are the most affected by the issues.

One in four women was married in childhood, so a quarter or 24 percent of divorce cases occurred because of child marriage. On the other hand, only two percent of men were married in childhood,” said President of Aisyiyah Salmah Orbayinah at the Dialog on the Organization’s Political Ideology conducted at Universitas ‘Aisyiyah on Sunday (14/5).

Besides, nine percent of gender-based violence cases were done by public officials such as civil servants, medical personnel, and law enforcement officers, although they were supposed to be protectors. Indeed, Indonesian women migrant workers faced violence, which increased 10.8 percent in 2022.

To respond to the issues, Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah arranged a program to strengthen family resilience based on Sakinah family with the Qoryah Toyyibah movement.

“Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah attempt to create a family to be a medium to cultivate a clean, healthy, and green life holistically, which will strengthen public health, said Orbayinah.

The program is closely related to the impacts of climate change in that women are the most affected group, but at the same time, they have crucial roles in adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change.

The Qoryah Toyyibah program has five pillars of Sakinah family development: spiritual development, education development, economic development, health development and environmental management, and social development.
