A delegation from the Muhammadiyah and Universitas Muhammadiyah Surabaya (UM Surabaya) embarked on a recent trip to Iran, seeking to forge new collaborations in the realm of healthcare. From January 26 to 31, 2024, their mission led them to the doors of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS), a renowned institution boasting the top medical faculty in Iran and a stellar international reputation.
This visit, initiated and facilitated by the Muhammadiyah Special Branch of Iran (PCIM Iran), was fueled by a shared vision: to elevate the quality of healthcare services and education within the Muhammadiyah network. TUMS impressive network of hospitals, equipped with cutting-edge technologies like robotic-assisted cancer treatment and gene therapy, presented an exciting prospect for collaboration.
“We see immense potential in partnering with TUMS, particularly in research and joint academic publications,” expressed Dr. Agus Taufiqurrahman, Chairman of Muhammadiyah. “Exchanging professors and students would also be invaluable in fostering knowledge exchange and building stronger healthcare education programs.”
TUMS Pharmaceutical Incubator has produced 120 essential pharmaceutical products exclusively since its establishment 20 years ago and has launched 60 new pharmaceutical products. Most of these drugs are available on the market and are provided to patients.
The facility produces high-tech drugs, including Factor VIII, medicines, and blood products. It produces 11 drugs exclusively and pharmaceutical products worth $671 million.
In addition, there are several pharmaceutical companies affiliated with TUMS in this facility. The types of drugs developed include tablets, capsules, inhalers, and injections.
During a meeting with the Incubator Head, the delegates expressed their aspirations to establish their own pharmaceutical production unit, catering to the needs of Muhammadiyah health facilities across Indonesia. The Head, impressed by Muhammadiyah vision, readily pledged his support, offering collaboration and guidance in this endeavor.
