No Contradiction between Islam and Pancasila, Says Muhammadiyah Secretary General

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MALANG – The Secretary General of Muhammadiyah, Abdul Mu’ti, emphasized that there is no contradiction between Islam and Pancasila.

In a political statement, Muhammadiyah explained that the Pancasila state is fully compatible with the teachings of Islam. This compatibility applies to the form itself, its underlying concepts, and the most beneficial form of the state.

“According to Muhammadiyah, Pancasila embodies Islamic values so that it does not contradict Islamic teachings,” said Abdul Mu’ti at the Darul Arqom program for Top Managers of the Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah higher education institutions on Saturday (June 29) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang.

Furthermore, the First Principle of Pancasila, according to Abdul Mu’ti, strongly reflects Islamic values and principles. The belief in the One God is the supreme principle, even surpassing religious law.

Mu’ti also explained Muhammadiyah role in formulating Pancasila as the foundation of the state. He highlighted that Muhammadiyah, through prominent figures such as Ki Bagus Hadikusumo, Kasman Singodimedjo, and Abdul Kahar Muzakir, played a significant role.

Muhammadiyah also has official documents related to this, such as “Pancasila sebagai Darul Ahdi Wa Syahadah” (Pancasila as Darul Ahdi wa Syahadah), which codifies Muhammadiyah’s stance and actions in advancing the Indonesian nation and state.

More specifically, Abdul Mu’ti said that Muhammadiyah aspires for Indonesia to become a “baldatun thayyibatun wa rabbun ghafur,” which translates to “a good country with the Most Forgiving God.”

Delving into the meaning of “baldatun thayyibatun wa rabbun ghafur,” Mu’ti referred to several interpretations and identified several definitions, including a country blessed with both natural goodness and the good character of its people.

According to Mu’ti, achieving this state requires constant worship of God, observance of noble morals, trustworthiness among state leaders and citizens, a balance between worldly and afterlife pursuits, and seeking forgiveness from God.
