MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Power, wealth, and status should be guided by a heart that is enlightened by the Quran to prevent people from straying into wrongdoing.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir pointed out that corruption and abuse of power often stem from privilege.
“When people are given wealth, authority, or opportunities, they often misuse them,” said Haedar in the Nuzulul Quran commemoration at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) on Monday, March 17.
For Muslims, he emphasized, the Quran should be a constant guide in life. Reading and understanding it can bring peace and clarity, even in difficult times.
“During Ramadan, we are encouraged to recite the Quran, and it has the power to revive our hearts. Even in moments of distress, its words bring comfort,” explained Haedar.
Haedar reminded that human nature has two sides: the potential for righteousness like angels and the tendency for destruction like devils. The Quran serves as a guide to help people stay on the right path and resist harmful temptations.
He also reflected on the temporary nature of life, urging people to stay mindful of their ultimate return to God.
“The Quran teaches us the purpose of life and the journey we are on. In Javanese philosophy, this is called sangkan paraning dumadi—understanding where we come from, why we live, and where we are headed after death,” he said.
During Ramadan, Haedar encouraged Muslims to reflect on their purpose and live with sincerity. He urged them to perform good deeds without seeking recognition.
“Do good without feeling superior. The number of good deeds does not guarantee entry into paradise—that is entirely up to Allah,” said Haedar.
