MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education of Indonesia had a meeting with staff of Muhammadiyah Australia College (MAC) and the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Rod Brazier, on Wednesday, July 9. The meeting focused on challenges and opportunities to develop MAC, particularly to support the development of teachers at the newly established MAC.
Minister Abdul Mu’ti warmly welcomed the visit of ten MAC teachers to Indonesia. He explained that this visit was part of his earlier request following his attendance at MAC’s Open Day in 2022.
Meanwhile, Secretary of Muhammadiyah Izzul Muslimin expressed his appreciation to the Australian government for supporting the establishment of MAC. He hoped the school would help spread Muhammadiyah vision of moderate Islam globally.
A member of the Muhammadiyah Department of International Relations and Cooperation, Popy Rufaidah, also emphasized the importance of this meeting in helping MAC overcome the typical challenges faced by a new educational institution. She encouraged collaboration with the ministry to address those needs.
Ambassador Brazier praised Muhammadiyah efforts in expanding education across borders.
“We all agree that Muhammadiyah is not just strong in Indonesia and Australia. It has become a global movement,” said Brazier.
Besides, MAC Principal Roszana Ramli shared the challenges the school has faced after the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in recruiting qualified teachers.
“As a new school, we have had to deal with many layers of challenges, such as hiring teachers, meeting administrative requirements, and adapting to culture,” explained Roszana.
She also highlighted the need for IELTS preparation programs for prospective Indonesian teachers, noting that all educators must be certified by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
In response, the ministry would hold internal discussions to explore solutions and offer support. A follow-up meeting with MAC will be scheduled to develop tangible steps.
Muhammadiyah also revealed plans to expand MAC’s presence in other Australian cities, such as Sydney, as part of its commitment to contributing to global education.
