MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah Australia College (MAC) Principal Roszana Ramli shared updates on the school’s progress and future expansion plans in the visit to Muhammadiyah schools in Yogyakarta from July 9 to 12, 2025,
Speaking in an interview at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) dormitory on Saturday, July 12, Roszana reflected on MAC’s journey since its establishment in 2022. Located in Melton, Australia, MAC is the first Muhammadiyah school operating in a Western country and follows the Australian curriculum.
“MAC started off with less than 50 students who came from different demographics and cultural backgrounds,” said Roszana.
Roszana mentioned that student enrollment has grown significantly, especially in 2023, as more young Muslim families move to Melton, one of Australia’s fastest-growing areas. As of mid-2025, MAC serves nearly 190 students.
Expansion Plans to Meet Growing Demand
While growth has been positive, Roszana acknowledged that the school is facing challenges, particularly related to limited space and strict student quotas set by the Australian government. To meet rising demand, MAC is planning for long-term expansion.
“We recently received a capital grant of 3.6 million Australian dollars and are preparing to open a second campus, MAC 2, in Sydney,” informed Roszana.
With this expansion, the school hopes to increase its student capacity to 300. Roszana also emphasized that MAC remains committed to Muhammadiyah values, which serve as a foundation for character education and community service.
“We want MAC to be a good representation of what Muhammadiyah is all about in a Western education setting which upholds the legacy of the importance of education. The school seeks to ensure that our future generation, or rather the product of MAC, will be ones that uphold and showcase the best of Akhlak while achieving excellence in whatever they do, giving back to the larger society, and continuing the legacy of Muhammadiyah being an organization that emphasizes the concept of progressive Islam. Inshallah,” said Roszana.
