EN.MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The dam sacrifice, a mandatory offering or penalty associated with certain Hajj rites, is ideally performed during Eid al-Adha or the Days of Tashriq, which fall on the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhulhijjah.
The statement came from Muhammad Rofiq Muzakkir, secretary of the Religious Opinion and Reform Council of Muhammadiyah Central Board, during an episode of Lensamu Podcast broadcast on Muhammadiyah Channel released on Saturday (23/5).
Although performing a dam sacrifice is recommended on the Day of Nahr, or the 10th of Dhulhijjah, and during the Days of Tashriq, Muhammadiyah’s 28th National Tarjih Conference concluded that no specific Islamic text establishes a final deadline for carrying out the sacrifice.
No Explicit Text Limiting the Timeframe
Rofiq cited Muhammadiyah’s 28th National Tarjih Conference. The gathering took place in 2014 in Palembang.
The conference reviewed the jurisprudence of Hajj rituals, including dam.
Participants concluded that no specific Islamic text sets a final deadline for the sacrifice.
Many Muslims believe dam must be completed by the end of the Days of Tashriq. However, Rofiq said the evidence often used for that view concerns Eid al-Adha sacrifices.
He argued that those texts do not directly regulate dam sacrifices during Hajj.
“At the Tarjih Conference in Palembang, we discussed Hajj jurisprudence, including dam,” Rofiq said.
“In 2014, the Tarjih Council allowed the period for Hajj dam sacrifices to extend until the end of Dhu al-Hijjah.”
A Principle of Ease for Pilgrims
The ruling appears in the conference’s official report.
According to the document, the absence of a fixed deadline reflects the principle of ‘adam al-haraj. The concept seeks to remove hardship from religious obligations.
Muhammadiyah scholars therefore view flexibility as beneficial for pilgrims. It can help them manage practical challenges during the Hajj season.
