MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – General Secretary of Muhammadiyah Abdul Mu’ti mentioned three critical global challenges and shed light on the vital role of universities in navigating these complex issues.
First, it is dealing with climate change. This issue is alarming and dramatically impacts the future of people and the world.
Second, it is regarding peace and security. Mu’ti brought attention to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict in which over 20,000 people, including innocent civilians, especially women and children, have lost their lives.
Mu’ti emphasized that peace and security are not only about the absence of warfare but also encompass various humanitarian aspects such as social, spiritual, and psychological assurances. He also highlighted Muhammadiyah’s concerns about human rights violations and human trafficking.
“Advocates for peace are deeply troubled by the rise of Islamophobia, xenophobia, anti-Semitism, racism, genocide, and various other forms of hatred,” said Mu’ti at the International Public Lecture on ‘The Role of Universities in Addressing Global Challenges’ at Harambee Mall, Harambee University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Saturday (December 2).
Last, Mu’ti addressed the sustainability of humanity. He pointed out that life’s purpose lies in sustainable development, a global agreement that has yet to be fully implemented. Due to poverty, millions of children are compelled to work and suffer from injustice, malnutrition, and more.
“Additionally, there is the challenge of an aging population. Changes in family structure and social values have given rise to issues concerning human brotherhood and dignity,” said Mu’ti.
