“Active Tawhid”: Muhammadiyah Response to Complex Contemporary Issues

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANDUNG – Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Dadang Kahmad mentioned that Muhammadiyah are confronting the growing complex issues and challenges.

He compared the current situation to the past, noting that while some problems like poverty and illiteracy persist, these issues have evolved and presented new dimensions and complexities that demand a more serious and comprehensive approach from Muhammadiyah.

“The problems we face today are intricate and multifaceted. They require a serious and more concerted effort from Muhammadiyah, as these intricate challenges coexist with unresolved problems from the past,” said Dadang in the Gerakan Subuh Mengaji (GSM) program conducted by ‘Aisyiyah of East Java on Thursday (July 4).

Despite the evolving nature of these challenges, Dadang emphasized the importance of revisiting the foundational principles which were established by Muhammadiyah predecessors and remain relevant to face modern complexities.

As a socio-religious organization, Muhammadiyah is firmly rooted in the values of tawhid, or oneness of God. Dadang explained that Muhammadiyah emphasizes “active tawhid,” a concept that translates into a responsive approach to the problems faced by humanity at every stage of life. This active tawhid creates a balance, ensuring that both the relationship with God and social responsibilities are given due consideration.

Drawing inspiration from the life of Ahmad Dahlan, the founder of Muhammadiyah, Dadang highlighted his embodiment of active tawhid. Ahmad Dahlan’s unwavering faith in Allah manifested in his acts of righteousness.

“He was both a pious individual and a person who was deeply engaged in social issues. He is a figure we should emulate besides the Prophet Muhammad,” said Dadang.

Ahmad Dahlan practiced and taught Surah Al-Ma’un. His actions indicated his active faith. Due to the teachings and practices, Muhammadiyah members have not only faith in Allah but also a commitment to helping the poor and caring for orphans.

“Muhammadiyah is a concrete manifestation of Ahmad Dahlan’s multifaceted faith, reflected in the form of a well-established organization,” said Dadang.

Muhammadiyah has always followed the same path and upheld the core values established by its founder, Ahmad Dahlan. The organization consists of individuals who practice active tawhid, seamlessly combining faith with righteous deeds.
