MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, EGYPT – Vice Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Council for Religious Preaching Adi Hidayat met Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Prof. Dr. Ahmad Thayyib at his official residence in Cairo, Egypt, on Wednesday, February 12. The meeting aimed to strengthen relations between Indonesian Muslims and Al-Azhar, one of the world’s most respected Islamic institutions.
Accompanied by key figures such as Al-Azhar’s Deputy Prof. Dr. Muhammad Dhuwaini and Director of Al-Azhar Da’wa Academy Prof. Dr. Muhammad Husain Al-Mahrashawi, the Grand Sheikh warmly welcomed Adi Hidayat and his delegation from the Quantum Akhyar Institute and the Indonesian Embassy in Egypt.
Promoting Islamic Moderation and Palestine Solidarity
The discussion focused on the importance of Islamic moderation (wasathiyyah) as a response to global challenges. The Grand Sheikh highlighted that moderation is at the core of Islamic teachings as a religion of mercy (rahmatan lil ‘alamin). He also praised Adi Hidayat’s efforts in promoting civilized and progressive values of Islam.
The two leaders also addressed the ongoing situation in Palestine. Al-Azhar has long been an advocate for Palestinian rights, and Adi Hidayat reaffirmed the commitment of Indonesia to supporting Palestine through moral, intellectual, and humanitarian efforts. Both sides agreed on the need for a constructive and sustainable approach to Palestinian advocacy.
Expanding Cooperation in Education and Da’wa
Adi Hidayat proposed potential collaboration between Quantum Akhyar Institute and Al-Azhar in Islamic education and da’wa in Indonesia. The Grand Sheikh welcomed this idea and expressed hope for stronger ties through educational programs, scholar exchanges, and broader Islamic studies.
Grateful for the warm reception, Adi Hidayat emphasized the importance of Islam that is knowledge-driven and relevant to modern challenges.
