MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Welcoming new students of Muhammadiyah schools, President Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir reminded students that every child is smart in their own way. He emphasized that differences in intelligence should never be a reason for bullying.
“There are not any stupid children. Every student is intelligent, but their strengths are different,” said Haedar on Monday, July 21.
Haedar stressed the importance of mutual respect among students, urging them not to look down on others just because they think they are smarter or come from a wealthier background.
“In Muhammadiyah schools, no student should be bullied, especially not because of how much money they have. Sometimes richer kids bully those who have less. That kind of behavior is not allowed, and it should not just stop when teachers are watching,” said Haedar.
Haedar also spoke about Tapak Suci, a traditional Indonesian martial art that is a mandatory extracurricular in Muhammadiyah schools and Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). He reminded students that it should be used for self-discipline and self-defense, not for intimidating others.
“If anyone feels like fighting, take it to Tapak Suci, but never use it to bully people,” said Haedar.
Haedar made it clear that Muhammadiyah schools are not only places to gain knowledge, but also to build strong character and good morals. He encouraged students to focus on learning and to build a community based on kindness and compassion.
“I don’t want to hear about bullying or any bad behavior in Muhammadiyah schools. Focus on learning, and above all, care for each other,” added Haedar.
Haedar also reminded students and parents not to underestimate the role of schools. According to him, education in Muhammadiyah is deeply rooted in values of faith, integrity, and knowledge.
“Don’t take your school for granted. Teachers and principals here are not just teaching you science and math. They’re helping you grow in your faith and character,” said Haedar.
At the same time, Haedar called on teachers and school leaders to set a good example. He urged them to be honest, fair, and kind so they can earn the respect of their students. When educators act with integrity, students will naturally learn to love and respect their parents, teachers, and principals.
