MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, IRAN – The Muhammadiyah Special Branch of Iran (PCIM Iran) marked this year’s Eid al-Adha by sacrificing three sheep, continuing a tradition they have held for three years.
“This is the third time PCIM Iran has carried out animal slaughter during Eid al-Adha. We are the only Indonesian community in Iran that performs animal sacrifice,” said Chairperson of PCIM Iran, Syahrul Ramadhan, in an interview on Thursday, June 5.
Following guidelines from the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI), the animal slaughter was conducted at a licensed slaughterhouse.
PCIM Iran, which is based in Tehran and Qom, distributed the meat not only to its members but also to fellow Indonesians and international students who are in need. According to Syahrul, the distribution serves both religious and social purposes, helping strengthen ties within the broader community.
“The occasion serves to foster unity, not only among ourselves but also with fellow Indonesians and international students,” said Syahrul.
In an effort to reduce plastic waste, PCIM Iran used reusable cloth bags for meat distribution.
Eid Celebrations in Iran
Syahrul also highlighted some key differences between celebrating Eid al-Adha in Iran and in Indonesia. One notable distinction is that Eid prayers in Iran are conducted at only one designated location per city.
“In Iran, where most Muslims are Shia, Friday prayers and Eid prayers for both Idulfitri and Eid al-Adha are only held in one place per city due to religious guidelines on distance,” he explained.
“In Iran, where most Muslims are Shia, both Friday and Eid prayers, both Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, take place at only one location per city, following religious guidelines on distance, explained Syahrul.
“Unlike in Indonesia, the Eid takbir does not echo through neighborhoods. Here, mosques are not allowed to use outdoor loudspeakers even though about 98% of the population is Muslim,” said Syahrul.
