Eid al-Adha in Malaysia: A Day of Devotion, Sacrifice, and Indonesian Diaspora Solidarity

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MALAYSIA – The Muhammadiyah Special Branch (PCIM) of Malaysia celebrates Eid al-Adha on Saturday, June 7, following the official date announced by Assistant Secretary of the Conference of Rulers, Datuk Mohd Aseral Jusman. Although the celebration falls on a different day from Indonesia’s, PCIM Malaysia is moving forward with its commitment to share and serve the community.

According to Secretary of PCIM Malaysia, Ahmad Fathoni, this year’s sacrifice will involve the sacrifice of 21 animals, consisting of 10 cows and 11 goats.

“We started preparing a month after Eid al-Fitr. We formed a committee, assigned roles, and surveyed the available livestock,” said Fathoni.

This year, the committee includes 166 members, with support from the ‘Aisyiyah Special Branch (PCIA) of Malaysia. The team also received training in proper animal slaughter from  Vice Chairperson of PCIM Malaysia, Zulfan Haidar.

“Zulfan Haidar is a certified slaughterer. He trained everyone here on how to properly perform the slaughter,” explained Fathoni.

More than a Ritual: Building Unity among Indonesian Migrants

For many Indonesian migrants in Malaysia, the annual sacrifice event is not just about distributing meat. It’s a chance to come together and feel connected.

“Receiving eid meat here is special. It reflects the care and empathy of our community. That sense of sharing makes the meaning of Eid al-Adha even stronger,” said Fathoni.

Fathoni added that the essence of sacrifice is not limited to the physical act of slaughter, but also includes the willingness to sacrifice time, energy, and thought to help others and support Muhammadiyah mission.

“The spirit of sacrifice is about more than just slaughtering sacrificial animals. It’s about the values of devotion, solidarity, and collective effort to serve the greater good,” said Fathoni.
