MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, TURKEY – Celebrating Eid in Turkey is a dream for many, as the country is known for its rich culture and breathtaking beauty. Among its many traditions, Eid al-Fitr is a particularly vibrant celebration.
In an interview on Sunday, March 30, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Special Branch of (PCIM) of Turkey, Ahmad Dhiyaul Haq, shared insights into the country’s unique Eid customs. Turkey offers not only stunning scenery but also deeply rooted traditions, making Eid festivities especially lively.
“When it comes to traditions, people in Turkey visit relatives, and children receive money or sweets. If you visit someone’s home during Eid, you will always find sweet treats on the table, such as baklava (a Turkish dessert), cookies, and plenty of candy,” explained Dhiyaul.
Having spent three years celebrating Eid in Turkey, Dhiyaul has developed a special appreciation for the holiday. He noted that for those looking for a truly festive atmosphere, large mosques, particularly Hagia Sophia, are the best places to experience Eid in its full glory.
Beyond the traditional Eid foods and celebrations, he highlighted another distinctive aspect, such as the prayer and the city’s atmosphere, especially in Istanbul. Unlike in Indonesia, Istanbul remains lively on Eid, with public transportation, restaurants, and tourist attractions operating as usual.
PCIM Turkey’s Preparations for Eid
PCIM Turkey also actively prepares for Eid with great enthusiasm. Many Indonesian Muslims celebrate the holiday at the Consulate General of Indonesia (KJRI) in Istanbul or at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Ankara.
In response to madhhab differences between Indonesia and Turkey, PCIM Turkey has created a video tutorial on Eid prayer.
“Since Turkey follows the Hanafi school of thought, we produced a tutorial on how to perform the Eid prayer here, helping those unfamiliar with the local practice,” stated Dhiyaul.
Eid al-Fitr in Turkey stands out for its unique traditions, festive atmosphere, and rich cultural experiences. From special sweets and family gatherings to the vibrant city life and grand mosque prayers, celebrating Eid in this transcontinental country is truly unforgettable.
