MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Irwan Akib emphasized the significance of Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) 1928 as a reflection for Indonesian youths.
This historic declaration, he argued, served as a powerful catalyst for Indonesia’s independence movement and continues to inspire unity among the nation’s youth today.
“If we look back at Indonesia’s history leading up to independence, we see that young people played a pivotal role. The Youth Pledge was a testament to their idealism and their commitment,” said Irwan Akib at the Muhammadiyah monthly preaching on Friday, October 18.
Youth Pledge 1928, Irwan explained, was a bold declaration of unity in diversity. Despite a diversity of cultures, languages, and religions, young Indonesian leaders came together to proclaim one homeland, one nation, and one language. This declaration, he said, was a powerful force that propelled the nation toward independence with the principle of “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika” (Unity in Diversity)..
“Indonesia’s diversity is like a beautiful garden with many colors. Just as a garden is more beautiful with a variety of flowers, Indonesia is enriched by its diverse cultures and traditions,” said Irwan.
Irwan called on today’s youth to embrace this diversity and work to build a more united and harmonious nation. He emphasized that Indonesia’s strength lies in its ability to harness the power of its diversity.
Irwan also urged young people to follow the example of the nation’s founding fathers, who were willing to sacrifice their personal interests for the sake of the nation.
“We should learn from their example and work together to build a better future for Indonesia,” said Irwan.
For information, the event featured several distinguished speakers, including the Indonesian Ambassador to Lebanon Hajriyanto Y Thohari, a sociology lecturer from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Zuly Qodir, and the Acting Head of the National Library of Indonesia E.
