Food Sovereignty through Farmer Empowerment: Muhammadiyah Vision for Prosperous Indonesia

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Muhammadiyah Council for Community Empowerment will conducted the First National Jamboree of Muhammadiyah Farmer Association (Jamnas I JATAM) on September 19-21, 2025. On Thursday, May 22, the Council launched the Jamboree logo and jingle.

Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Agung Danarto stated that farmers play an important role in Muhammadiyah grassroots mission and need tangible support to improve their livelihoods and quality of life.

“I believe it is our collective responsibility to support farmers with hope and positivity. Agriculture is a vital field that cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence. Food will always be essential for humanity,” said Agung.

Quoting Surah ‘Abasa, verses 23 and 25, Agung reminded that Islam teaches the importance of ensuring food availability and sustainability, not just for humans but for all living beings.

Agung also pointed out that farmers are increasingly vulnerable, not only because of market instability but also due to unpredictable climate conditions. These environmental challenges, including water scarcity, should be discussed seriously during Jamnas I JATAM in Kebumen.

“Agriculture is now facing water issues. The risk of water shortage, both now and in the future, will have a major impact on farming,” added Agung.

Agung called on the Muhammadiyah Council for Community Empowerment and Muhammadiyah environmentalists to take part in addressing these issues, aiming to help Indonesia meet its own food needs and even contribute to global food security.

Agung also hoped that JATAM would become a national model for empowering farmers, noting that they need attention not only in farming practices (on-farm) but also in broader aspects like processing, distribution, and business (off-farm).

Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Council M. Nurul Yamin expressed his hopes for a successful and meaningful Jamboree. He emphasized that preparation and excitement should begin immediately.

Yamin explained that the idea for Jamnas I JATAM came from Muhammadiyah’s 48th Congress in Surakarta, which encouraged strengthening grassroots-level efforts, especially among farmers.

“We are following up on the results of the 48th Congress in 2022, which highlighted the importance of grassroots da’wa. In this context, it means reaching farming communities,” he said.

The Jamboree also continues the theme of the 2024 Tanwir in Kupang, “Prosperity for All.” This year’s event theme is Food Sovereignty for Prosperous Indonesia.

Jamnas I JATAM will feature several key events, including an opening ceremony led by President of Muhammadiyah, the launch of a new variety of upland rice (Padi Gogo), and the showcasing of agricultural innovations by Muhammadiyah farmers. Other highlights include a JATAM discussion forum, a national food business forum, a food innovation expo promoting smart farming, a large public sermon on food sovereignty by Adi Hidayat, a symbolic planting movement, and a closing session with the Minister of Education, Culture, Reserach, and Technology Abdul Mu’ti.

“This will require strong collaboration. We’ve already coordinated with the leadership of the Provincial Board of Central Java, since Central Java along with East Java is one of the country’s main food-producing regions,” said Yamin.

The event is part of a broader effort led by the Council to promote food sovereignty in Indonesia. Through this initiative, Muhammadiyah aims to raise public awareness and play a key role in building a stronger, more resilient national food system.
