Haedar Nashir: Muhammadiyah Won’t Stop Building Civilization

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BUMIAYU— President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir mentioned that Muhammadiyah would never tire of building civilization by providing practical solutions in people’s lives.

The establishment of schools, hospitals, Islamic boarding schools, orphanages, and other business charities aims to benefit people.

“Impacts of what Muhammadiyah has done are broadly received in unexpected remote areas. For instance, none of Islamic organizations except Muhammadiyah could found a university in Sorong, Papua,” said Haedar at the Pengajian Akbar at RSU Muhammadiyah Siti Aminah Bumiayu.

According Haedar, Muhammadiyah’s success in building social facilities comes from the soul, spirit, mind, and behavior of Islam Berkemajuan (Progressive Islam). The understanding enables Muhammadiyah to make a move flexibly to respond to challenges of the era while upholding God’s commands.

“A soul, spirit, mind, and behavior in Muhammadiyah is applied through actions such as performing good deeds, giving, and bringing benefits to many people. This is what we call Progressive Islam,” said Haedar.

Progressive Islam is neither a school nor a new religion. It is an authentic spirit of Islam. There are many values that are characterized by progressivity in the Qur’an and the Hadith of the Prophet.

Therefore, the notion of Progressive Islam actually is intended to return the meaning of Islam how it’s supposed to be.

“Islam is din al-hadlarah or a religion that builds advanced civilization, but its civilization is generated by religion,” said Haedar.

Many verses in the Qur’an emphasize advancement. Haedar mentioned that the first verse revealed to the Prophet was not about prayer, but iqra (Surah Al Alaq 1-5). Iqra refers to not only reading verbally or textually but also reading the universe, studying, exploring and all thinking activities.

“The first revelation is not regarding prayer but reading. Read anything, the universe, books, and everything. Iqra also means thinking, exploring, projecting, and so on,” said Haedar.

Haedar also quoted surah Ar-Radu verse 11 that Allāh will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. The verse is an encouragement to endeavor. The Prophet Muhammad proved through his 23-year da’wa to change behaviors of people from jahiliyah to  al-madinah al-munawwarah.

Islam has brought glory, worldwide, and enlightened the universe for centuries.

“We believe hablu minallah, that every time there is a calamity, we rely on, surrender, be patient, but we endeavor and do our best to create benefit,” said Haedar.

On this occasion Haedar also signed six inscriptions, namely the Great Mosque of Muhammadiyah H. Arman Thayfuri, Muhammadiyah Children Center Building for the Panti Asuhan Muhammadiyah Bumiayu, Mukaromah Building at RSU Muhammadiyah Siti Aminah Bumiayu, Madinah Building at RSU Muhammadiyah Siti Aminah Bumiayu, Muzdalifah Building at RSU Muhammadiyah Siti Aminah Bumiayu, and the Aisyiyah Da’wah Building of Tonjong Branch of Brebes, and Ground Breaking of five-floor Musdalifah Polyclinic.
