MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SORONG – Universitas Pendidikan Muhammadiyah (UNIMUDA) Sorong stands out as a beacon of diversity, with the President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir revealing that 70% of its students identify as non-Muslims. This unique demographic makes UNIMUDA Sorong a living example of what Nashir calls a “Krismuha” university, embodying the harmonious integration of Christian and Muhammadiyah principles.
In the landscape of Muhammadiyah higher education institutions, UNIMUDA Sorong’s student composition defies the conventional religious majority, signaling Muhammadiyah’s commitment to values like tolerance, adaptation, and acculturation, in line with Indonesia’s national motto, Bhineka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity).
“Seventy percent of our students, who practice Christianity and Catholicism, belong to the indigenous population of Papua. This stands as a testament to the essence of the ‘Krismuha‘ (Kristen Muhammadiyah/Muhammadiyah Christian) university,” said Haedar at the inauguration of PKU Muhammadiyah UNIMUDA Sorong on November 24.
Beyond its unique composition, Haedar highlighted UNIMUDA Sorong’s notable efforts in inclusivity, such as enrolling ten students from Papua New Guinea who received scholarships, aligning with the vision of President Joko Widodo.
Haedar mentioned the increasing number of international students at Muhammadiyah universities, emphasizing that their presence aligns with Muhammadiyah’s commitment to supporting government initiatives.
“This showcases the progressive spirit of Muhammadiyah. However, this progress is a joint effort involving the government, all elements of the nation, and society, including those in Papua,” said Nashir.
Seizing the moment, Haedar called for support from all stakeholders, underscoring Muhammadiyah’s dedication to continually contribute to the welfare of people, the nation, and universal humanity.
