Malaysia and Muhammadiyah Strengthen Solidarity for Palestine

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID YOGYAKARTA — A meeting between the Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia and Muhammadiyah delved into issues beyond education and economic cooperation. The central focus of the discussion was the ongoing struggle for Palestinian independence.

The Malaysian Ambassador to Indonesia Dato’ Syed Mohamad Hasrin Tengku Hussin reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause. Dato’ Hasrin emphasized the importance of continued diplomatic efforts at the United Nations despite the challenges posed by international politics.

“We are continuously striving for Palestinian independence even though there are many obstacles due to international politics. One of the ways we can contribute is by providing humanitarian and health assistance,” Dato’ Hasrin stated in his visit to the Muhammadiyah headquarters, Yogyakarta, on Friday, November 8.

Meanwhile, the President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir highlighted a growing global movement in support of Palestine. This circumstance may shift political dynamics in the Middle East. However, he cautioned against extremist actions that could undermine this solidarity.

“Muslims should maintain international sympathy. If ‘harsh’ movements arise, this could damage global solidarity for Palestin,” emphasized Haedar, adding an Indonesian proverb to convey the idea that a small mistake can have far-reaching consequences.

Both leaders also highlighted the crucial role of youth and international media in raising awareness about the Palestinian cause. Dato’ Hasrin pointed to the growing support for Palestine among young people and the increasing coverage of the issue by mainstream media. He also emphasized the effectiveness of boycotts against Israeli products, suggesting that Indonesian and Malaysian consumers could exert significant pressure by refusing to purchase such goods.

To further strengthen the global movement for Palestinian independence, Haedar and Hasrin agreed to enhance cooperation within the Islamic world. The support of political leaders like Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto was seen as crucial in bolstering solidarity.

Besides, the Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Syamsul Anwar stressed the importance of increased collaboration among Muslim communities to support the Palestinian struggle. The meeting, which was attended by key figures from both Muhammadiyah and the Malaysian Embassy, concluded with a renewed commitment to supporting Palestine through diplomatic, humanitarian, and economic means.
