Muhammadiyah Adopts Global Hijri Calendar

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA –  Muhammadiyah has adopted the criteria proposed in the Turkey Congress on Hijri Calendar Unity in 2016 as the basis for its concept of a unified global hijri calendar. The Congress established a calendar system based on the principle of one day corresponding to one date across the entire globe.

Maskufa, a member of the Muhammadiyah Council for Religious Opinion and Tajdid, explained a key principle of the global hijri calendar: absolute unity in determining the start of Islamic months. However, this principle is balanced with the requirement of rukyat feasibility. Rukyat refers to the scientific possibility of sighting the crescent moon, which depends on factors like the minimum crescent height (at least 5 degrees) and the minimum elongation angle (at least 8 degrees) at any given location on Earth. Muhammadiyah adoption of the criteria reflects its belief that this concept offers the ideal foundation for creating an Islamic calendar that can unify Muslims in the world.

“We believe the concept outlined in the criteria is the most suitable for establishing a unified Islamic calendar. Our choice is also driven by the values of openness, togetherness, and progress, all aimed at strengthening the role of Islam as a blessing for humanity,” said Maskufa in the lecture held by the Central Board of Muhammadiyah on Friday (July 5).

Beyond the practical benefits of a unified calendar, this decision embodies the spirit of openness, collaboration, and advancement that Muhammadiyah values. It emphasizes their belief in an Islamic perspective that embraces critical thinking and continuous improvement. Decisions can be reviewed and refined to ensure they serve the collective good.

“Openness to critique is a cornerstone of Muhammadiyah’s Islamic worldview. Any decision can be evaluated and improved upon for the benefit of all,” said Muskufa.

Maskufa expressed confidence that implementing the single hijri calendar based on the 2016 Turkey Congress will have a positive impact. It will bring greater certainty and consistency to Muslim worship times around the world, especially for those living in Muslim-minority countries. The unified hijri calendar will also become a visible symbol of Islamic unity, promoting a more unified approach to observing religious holidays and rituals, which have sometimes been a source of disagreement and division.

Ultimately, Maskufa hopes that the global hijri calendar will foster a stronger sense of global unity and solidarity among Muslims. This initiative also highlights Muhammadiyah ongoing commitment to innovation and meaningful contributions that can benefit both the Muslim world and broader society.
