Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah Historic Contributions to Literacy

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, SURAKARTA – Muhammadiyah has consistently prioritized literacy as a fundamental aspect of its mission. This commitment was reaffirmed at the recent Muhammadiyah Festival of Press and Literacy 2024 that the organization celebrated its rich history of promoting literacy and knowledge.

Chairperson of ‘Aisyiyah, Siti Aisyah, mentioned the deep connection between the Muhammadiyah-’Aisyiyah establishment and the Islamic literacy and press movements of its time.

“Inspired by Surah Ali Imran verse 104, Muhammadiyah, under the leadership of Ahmad Dahlan, emerged as a movement that prioritized literacy, and so did ‘Aisyiyah,” said Siti Aisyah.

One of the Muhammadiyah commitments to literacy is the recognition bestowed upon its publications. Both Suara Muhammadiyah and Suara ‘Aisyiyah have earned prestigious MURI records.

“Meanwhile, Suara ‘Aisyiyah, established in 1926, has been awarded the MURI record as the first and longest-running women’s media in Indonesia that has never ceased publication,” said Siti Aisyah.

Since its establishment in 1912, Muhammadiyah has not only existed but has also made a significant impact through its various initiatives.

Siti Aisyah highlighted the crucial role of literacy in the global spread of Islam. She emphasized that Islamic scholars, with their strong literacy skills, played a pivotal role in disseminating and promoting Islamic knowledge, contributing to the advancement of Islamic civilization in various fields.

“Looking at the history of Islamic civilization and its influence on Europe and Russia, it becomes evident that the technology development was largely driven by Muslim intellectuals and their commitment to literacy,” said Siti Aisyah.
