MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MERAUKE – Muhammadiyah officially inaugurated the Muhammadiyah Provincial Board (PWM) and ‘Aisyiyah Provincial Board (PWA) of South Papua in Merauke on Saturday, June 28. The inauguration became a historic step for the organization in this newly established province.
Muhammadiyah Chairperson of Organization, Ideology, and Muhammadiyah Young Generation Development Agung Danarto emphasized Muhammadiyah’s inclusive approach to service. He stressed that Muhammadiyah’s presence should benefit everyone regardless of ethnicity, religion, or background.
“The presence of Muhammadiyah should be felt by all, not only Muhammadiyah members or Muslims but also the whole community,” said Agung.
Agung encouraged the PWM of South Papua to collaborate with various parties to help develop the province, which has been established for two years. Agung said Muhammadiyah contribution should be tangible and impactful.
Muhammadiyah, he mentioned, is not new to Papua. The organization, founded in 1912 in Yogyakarta, has had a presence in Papua since the 1930s. This engagement is a strong foundation for building harmony and progress in the region.
“Although this is the first official provincial board in South Papua, it follows the formation of the new province. We hope the new leaders will truly dedicate themselves to advancing the Muhammadiyah mission and contributing to the nation,” added Agung.
To support the newly formed PWM and PWA in South Papua, the Central Board has appointed the PWM of Central Java as a mentoring partner, recognizing its strong track record and organizational capacity.
Besides, the event also celebrated the opening of the PKU Muhammadiyah Clinic in Merauke. The initiative was warmly received by the South Papua Provincial Government. Sucahyo Agung, from the regional inspectorate, expressed appreciation for Muhammadiyah efforts.
“We hope the inauguration of PWM and PWA, along with the launch of the PKU Muhammadiyah Clinic, becomes a part of building better South Papua through collaboration,” said Sucahyo.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Regent of Merauke, Fauzun Nihayah, also expressed his gratitude for Muhammadiyah’s presence in the region and stressed the importance of cooperation.
“The government cannot work alone. We need support and collaboration from all elements, including Muhammadiyah. The best service is the one we provide together,” said Fauzun.
