MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – In a call to action for environmental protection, Muhammadiyah has launched the “1000 Cahaya” (1000 Lights) program. This initiative aims to foster a green movement by promoting sustainable practices and raising awareness about climate change.
Abdul Mu’ti, Secretary General of Muhammadiyah, emphasized the urgency of addressing environmental challenges, stating that “the world is not just experiencing global warming, but the world is boiling.” He highlighted the program as a concrete step towards building a greener and healthier society.
Muhammadiyah recognizes the human impact on climate change, understanding that environmental degradation stems not only from natural processes but also from human behavior and culture.
The organization envisions a “Green Movement” that goes beyond environmental friendliness to foster a healthy society that prioritizes well-being and sustainability.
Azrul Tanjung, Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Council for Environmental Preservation, outlined the program’s scope, emphasizing the involvement of Muhammadiyah branches, schools, mosques, and institutions. The program aims to engage these entities in promoting renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable practices within their respective spheres.
To further the program’s reach, a roadmap will be developed by the Council, outlining strategies for expanding renewable energy initiatives and encouraging energy-efficient practices through donations and charitable contributions.
Hening Parlan, Coordinator of the “1000 Cahaya” program, mentioned its objectives, focusing on building a “Green Movement” centered on schools, mosques, and Islamic boarding schools.
“Over the next three years, the program seeks to mobilize 1,000 actions that shed light on the severity of the climate crisis,” said Hening in the program launch on Monday (May 6).
Crucially, the program seeks to encourage Muhammadiyah institutions to adopt clean energy sources and incorporate sustainable practices into their operations.
