MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah has introduced “Becak Listrik 1912” (Electric Pedicab 1912) to support becak (pedicab) drivers in Yogyakarta. The initiative, launched on March 15, aims to improve drivers’ livelihoods while promoting eco-friendly transportation.
Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Agung Danarto led the launch and praised the program initiated by the Muhammadiyah Council for Community Empowerment Council (MPM).
“In this blessed month, MPM is showing its commitment to supporting underprivileged communities. This initiative is a real expression of care and solidarity,” said Agung.
Agung also acknowledged the support of Bank Danamon Syariah, which funded the program through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, along with contributions from Muhammadiyah social enterprise (AUM) in Yogyakarta.
Agung emphasized Muhammadiyah role in connecting wealthy benefactors with those in need.
“MPM work extends beyond pedicab drivers. It also supports waste collectors, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities,” added Agung. He hopes the initiative will not only help drivers financially but also contribute to Yogyakarta’s efforts in promoting environmentally friendly transport.
Promoting Sustainable Transportation
MPM Chairperson M. Nurul Yamin explained that this program builds on previous efforts to support pedicab drivers. “Previously, members of a becak driver association used traditional pedal-powered pedicab. Now, we are transitioning them to electric pedicabs. We encourage those still using motorized pedicabs (bentor) to gradually switch to electric vehicles,” stated Yamin.
Yamin added that Becak Listrik 1912 strengthens Yogyakarta’s identity as a city of culture, tourism, education, and a historic Muhammadiyah hub. He envisions a electric pedicab driver association offering guided city tours to historical sites in Yogyakarta and Muhammadiyah landmarks.
Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) played a key role in developing the electric pedicab. UAD Rector Muchlas MT explained that the vehicle was created as part of the university’s research on sustainable transportation, in collaboration with the Yogyakarta city government and the Department of Transportation.
“The Becak Listrik 1912 is powered by a direct current (DC) motor and a dry battery. The battery and motor have been designed for efficiency, allowing a full charge in about an hour..” said Muchlas. A charging station will be set up at Hotel SM, Yogyakarta to support the program.
Positive Response and Economic Benefits
Yogyakarta’s Deputy Mayor, Wawan Harmawan, personally tested the electric pedicab, giving a ride to Muhammadiyah leader Agung Danarto. Wawan emphasized the importance of ensuring local residents, especially pedicab drivers, benefit from the city’s economic opportunities.
“We hope the becak in Yogyakarta continues to be operated by local residents, so that economic activity remains within the city,” he said, noting that much of Yogyakarta’s economy is currently dominated by outside investors.
Bank Danamon Syariah also expressed full support for the initiative. The bank’s Director of Sharia and Sustainability, Herry Hykmanto, highlighted the impact of CSR programs in uplifting communities.
“We are proud to partner with Muhammadiyah on this initiative, which has the potential to create a meaningful impact,” stated Hykmanto.
