Muhammadiyah Sapen Universal School: A World-Class Education Founded on Faith, Knowledge, and Character

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANTUL – Muhammadiyah continues to play a vital role in shaping the future of Indonesia through its dedication to education. Founded on Islamic principles, the organization serves people from all backgrounds regardless of religion, social group, or political views. Muhammadiyah believes that Islam is a blessing for all humanity.

President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir emphasized this mission during the groundbreaking ceremony for Muhammadiyah Sapen Universal School on Sunday, May 25. Haedar said that the new school represents Muhammadiyah broader goal of expanding access to education for everyone.

“This isn’t just about building a new school. It’s about realizing Muhammadiyah vision to help educate the nation and contribute to its progress,” said Haedar.

SD Muhammadiyah Sapen, where the new Universal School will be developed, is already known as one of the top elementary schools in Yogyakarta and across Indonesia. With student enrollment fully booked until 2032, the school has earned the trust of many families looking for excellent education.

“The fact that registration is full until 2032 shows how much the public values this school. It reflects our commitment to quality, integrity, and preparing future generations with care,” said Haedar.

Haedar recalled how the school grew from modest beginnings to become a model of excellence, driven by Muhammadiyah vision of progressive Islam and the dedication of educators who have supported it along the way.

The Muhammadiyah Sapen Universal School will not only offer academic education but also focus on developing students’ character, emotional maturity, and spiritual strength. Plans are already in place to expand the school into a full educational path, eventually adding junior and senior high school levels to maintain consistent quality from start to finish.

At the same time, ‘Aisyiyah, together with Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (Unisa) Yogyakarta, is preparing to launch TK ABA Semesta, an early childhood education center. This new preschool aims to offer high-quality early learning experiences in Yogyakarta, known as the city of education and culture.

Haedar hoped that the Sapen Universal School would become a symbol of Muhammadiyah effort to create world-class education based on Islamic values.

“This school should not only produce smart students but also those with strong character, noble behavior, and compassion for others,” said Haedar.

Haedar explained that the school is designed to meet international standards by blending modern science, digital technology, character building, and Islamic teachings that inspire and uplift.

“Muhammadiyah Sapen Universal School will be part of a global network. It will contribute to a worldwide Islamic education movement that adapts to the times while upholding our cultural and religious values.”

With over a century of experience in education, from elementary schools to universities, Muhammadiyah continues to lead with innovative and future-focused approaches. Its role in the national education system remains essential.

Haedar stressed that building a school is not just about putting up walls. It’s about building a future. The new school reflects Muhammadiyah mission to promote a more inclusive and enlightened way of thinking, helping the nation move beyond poverty and underdevelopment.

Haedar also noted the importance of collaboration between Muhammadiyah, the government, and society in supporting the education of Indonesian youth. Through inclusive and transformative education, he believes future leaders will be globally minded, morally strong, and deeply connected to Indonesian values.

“Muhammadiyah will keep moving forward, bringing light to the nation,” Haedar said. “We aim to raise a generation that is faithful, well-mannered, knowledgeable, skilled in technology, and socially responsible.”

He concluded with a reminder that Indonesia’s future depends on producing well-rounded individuals, not just those who are smart, but also ethical and respectful.

“A golden and modern Indonesia needs people who are not only intelligent, but who also live with dignity and values. Without that, society will fall apart,” said Haedar.
