MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAPAN – SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta partners Workshop Initiatives for Language Learning (WILL) Japan for the Students Meet Internationally Through Language Education (SMILE) Project.
The partnership, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Monday, December 9, in Tokyo, aims to provide students with opportunities to enhance their English language skills through real-time online collaborations with Japanese students.
SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta is committed to equipping our students with the skills needed to thrive in the 4.0 industrial revolution while upholding the core values of the Quran and Sunnah.
“English is the primary language of global communication, and proficiency in this language is essential for success in today’s interconnected world. We believe this program will be beneficial for our graduates,” said Hery Nugroho, the school’s principal.
Professor Shigenori Wakabayashi, Representative Director of WILL Japan, explained the rationale behind the SMILE Project.
“Studies on English language development have been evolving since the 1960s, and all theories agree that certain aspects of language use can only be improved through interaction,” said Shigenori..
“Additionally, language education should provide learners with opportunities for direct interaction in foreign languages. Lastly, it is important to meet people from different backgrounds to understand the unique conditions and cultures of various regions,” added Shigenori.
The SMILE Project will involve a series of real-time online collaborative classes, including video discussions between students from both schools. Topics will include self-introductions, cultural exchanges, and discussions about dreams and future plans. Teachers from SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Yogyakarta will facilitate student participation and monitor their progress.
Beyond student exchanges, the partnership will also support teachers and staff in their professional development through online resources related to international language and culture.
