MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANYUWANGI – SMK Muhammadiyah 8 Siliragung, Banyuwangi, East Java is taking a role in the fight against plastic waste. The school recently launched a Water Station, a designated area where students and staff can refill their reusable water bottles. This initiative is a key part of their comprehensive strategy to promote environmental awareness and encourage responsible consumption habits within the school community.
Muhlas Efendi, the school’s principal, recognizes the significant environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles. He has implemented new policies within the school canteen, encouraging the use of reusable containers and minimizing the sale of single-use plastic options.
With a large student and staff population, Muhlas Efendi understands the substantial amount of waste generated daily. He emphasizes the importance of establishing new habits and implementing clear regulations to effectively manage plastic waste and create a more sustainable school environment.
SMK Muhammadiyah 8 Siliragung’s commitment to environmental responsibility extends beyond the Water Station. The school is partnering with Eco Bhinneka and Nasyiatul Aisyiyah to implement a comprehensive plastic waste reduction program. This collaboration aligns perfectly with the Muhammadiyah school system’s dedication to environmental stewardship and Eco Bhinneka’s mission of promoting sustainable practices.
Besides, Windarti, Secretary I of Nasyiatul Aisyiyah (PPNA), expressed her enthusiasm for the program’s potential impact. She believes the Water Station and other initiatives will create a cleaner and more comfortable learning environment for students.
“With the Eco Bhinneka School program at SMK Muhammadiyah 8 Siliragung, we hope that the school can further internalize Eco Bhinneka’s vision and mission into its daily activities,” said Windari in a press release on Friday (July 19).
Looking towards the future, Windarti announced an upcoming Eco Bhinneka Fun Camp, a collaborative effort between Eco Bhinneka Muhammadiyah and SMK Muhammadiyah 8 Siliragung. This exciting camp will provide students with the opportunity to learn more about environmental issues, celebrate diversity within the school community, and gain valuable hands-on experience in plastic waste management strategies.
