MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – Muhammadiyah deployed a humanitarian team to Myanmar to help victims of the earthquake that struck the northern part of the country on March 28, 2025. Through its Disaster Management Center (MDMC) and the Muhammadiyah Department for Charity Management (Lazismu), Muhammadiyah is providing emergency support for people affected by the disaster.
Powerful aftershocks continue to shake Myanmar three weeks after the initial earthquake, adding to the uncertainty and worsening conditions for survivors, especially with limited resources.
According to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre), the earthquake has killed 3,700 people, injured 4,800 others, and left 129 missing as of April 18, 2025.
In response, Muhammadiyah deployed a team consisting of Syahri Ramadhan as team coordinator, Dwi Kurniawan for data and media, and Satriyo Yudo Budi Wicaksono for emergency logistics. The team departed from Jakarta to Yangon before heading to the disaster-hit areas.
“This mission is part of our global humanitarian responsibility. We want to be present for our brothers and sisters in Myanmar. This reflects the concern of Indonesian Muslims in responding to global disasters,” said MDMC Chaiperson Budi Setiawan.
Meanwhile, the team coordinator Syahri Ramadhan explained that the mission’s main goal is to deliver essential aid to people living in temporary shelters. The team will also assess ongoing needs and seek local partners for long-term recovery efforts. The assistance will be focused in Nay Pyi Taw (NPT), Sagaing, and Mandalay.
“The items we’re bringing are crucial for daily needs in emergency settlements. They include basic household supplies, tents, hygiene kits, clean water and sanitation equipment, tools for clearing debris, and cash assistance for various needs,” said Syahri.
The aid is especially targeted at vulnerable groups living in tents and temporary shelters. Muhammadiyah, in partnership with the local organization Phoenix, plans to distribute the aid to 1,000 families and 400 individuals.
To support ongoing efforts, MDMC and Lazismu have opened a national donation account for medium- and long-term relief. Muhammadiyah is also working with local and international humanitarian groups to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most. The mission will run from April 24 to May 7, 2025, with regular progress evaluations.
