MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Muhammadiyah officially announced that Eid al-Adha 1446 AH falls on Friday, June 6, 2025. This decision is based on astronomical calculations using the wujudul hilal method, a crescent visibility approach to determine the beginning of each Islamic month.
To mark the beginning of a new month using this method, three conditions must be met: the new moon (called ijtima’) must occur, it must happen before sunset, and the moon must still be visible above the horizon at sunset. If any of these conditions aren’t met, the current month is extended by one more day.
According to Muhammadiyah’s calculations, ijtima before the month of Dhu al-Hijjah occurrs on May 27, 2025, at 10:04:18 Western Indonesian Time. At sunset in Yogyakarta, the moon’s altitude reached +01° 27’ 07”, confirming that the crescent was visible, marking the beginning of 1 Dhu al-Hijjah 1446 AH on May 28, 2025. The moon was also above the horizon across all regions of Indonesia, further validating the new lunar month’s commencement.
This means the Day of Arafah is on Thursday, June 5. On this day, Muslims performing Hajj gather in Arafah for the spiritual peak of the pilgrimage. The following day, June 6, is Eid al-Adha, when Muslims around the world celebrate with prayers and the tradition of animal sacrifice.
Muhammadiyah encouraged the public to prepare by choosing quality sacrificial animals and ensuring fair distribution of the meat, especially to those in need. Besides, people may reflect on the sincerity and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to give up what he loved most in obedience to Allah.
Looking ahead, Muhammadiyah will adopt the Unified Global Hijri Calendar starting in 1447 AH, as stated in Decree No. 86/KEP/I.0/B/2025. This marks a significant step in Muhammadiyah commitment to fostering unity among Muslims through a more integrated lunar calendar, bridging tradition with contemporary advancements.
