MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MERAUKE – Muhammadiyah plans to establish a university in South Papua. This tangible action indicates Muhammadiyah commitment to providing access to quality education in the region.
The plan to found Universitas Muhammadiyah Merauke was marked by an official visit from Ahmad Muttaqin, Secretary of the Muhammadiyah Council for Higher Education, Research, and Development to the Muhammadiyah Educational Institutions in Spadem, Merauke on July 17 to 20, 2025.
“This is part of Muhammadiyah’s continuous effort to develop educational institutions. We are committed to nurturing the nation’s future, from early childhood education to the university level,” said Muttaqin.
Muttaqin emphasized that this initiative is not only about founding another campus but also about building inclusive and progressive education that supports the growth of human resources in the region.
The proposal has received strong support from local leadership. Deputy Governor of South Papua, Paskalis Imadawa, welcomed the plan and highlighted its alignment with the province’s long-term goals to strengthen the character and quality of its younger generation.
“Let’s continue to support our children to have access to elementary school, high school and higher education,” said Paskalis during a school orientation in the Tanah Miring District.
With the establishment of Universitas Muhammadiyah Merauke, Muhammadiyah hopes to play a greater role in advancing education in Eastern Indonesia. The university is expected to provide a supportive and inspiring environment for learning, helping to shape a brighter future for the region.
