MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANTUL – Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) implements a new approach to waste management that combines environmental sustainability with economic viability.
The Chairperson of Muhammadiyah, who is also the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the UMY, Agung Danarto emphasized the importance of Muhammadiyah-‘Aisyiyah higher education institutions engaging in businesses that not only generate profit but also address pressing social and environmental issues.
Agung highlighted UMY efforts in tackling the waste problem. “UMY is working to address the internal waste issue by processing it in a way that can serve as a model for independent waste management,” said Agung on Friday, December 27.
The university aims to transform its waste into a valuable resource, creating a self-sustaining system.
Meanwhile, the Rector of UMY Gunawan Budiyanto elaborated on this initiative. He revealed that the university plans to repurpose the processed plastic waste into benches for the university gardens.
“After sorting the organic and non-organic waste, we will process the plastic waste into blocks and rods, which will then be used to create benches,” said Gunawan.
This innovative approach not only reduces waste but also beautifies the university. Gunawan further emphasized UMY commitment to sustainability, stating,
“UMY will continue to evolve as a self-sufficient campus, prioritizing the well-being of its students and staff through initiatives such as the ‘Healthy and Comfortable Campus’ program,” said Gunawan.
