MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Centre (MDMC) was established in response to the frequent disasters that plague various regions in Indonesia. MDMC becomes the coordinating body for Muhammadiyah resources, ensuring their efficient deployment in disaster relief and humanitarian efforts.
This vital role of MDMC was highlighted by the Chairperson of Muhammadiyah, Agus Taufiqurrahman, during a book discussion on “Kajian Dunia Barat dan Islam: Visi Ulang Kemanusiaan Universal” (Studies of the Western World and Islam: A Re-Vision of Universal Humanitarianism) by Sudibyo Markus. The discussion took place at the Muhammadiyah Office, Yogyakarta, on Monday (July 1).
Agus also recognized Sudibyo Markus as one of the most important figures in MDMC. Markus’ dedication and significant contributions to the organization’s humanitarian mission have been longstanding. Despite his age (born in 1941), Markus remains a constant source of energy and commitment.
“Sudibyo’s dedication transcends his age. He remains energetic,” said Agus.
Agus emphasized that the support for MDMC and the roles of Sudibyo Markus are crucial. The efforts align perfectly with the mandate of the Muhammadiyah congress (Muktamar), which calls for a more prominent role in internationalization and global humanitarian action. Muhammadiyah internationalization efforts focus on three key areas: sharing ideas and thoughts, increasing its roles in international levels, and fostering international movements abroad.
“First, we aspire to disseminate Muhammadiyah humanitarian ideas and values, allowing them to influence the world around us. Second, we seek to enhance our roles in international levels, such as having presentations at the United Nations (UN) and deploying delegations to the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, it is essential for Muhammadiyah special branches (PCIMs) to have active global participation,” said Agus.
Agus further elaborated on Muhammadiyah commitment to internationalization. “Third, we are actively working to establish a strong and organic presence of our movement overseas,” said Agus.
The book discussion also served as an opportunity for Agus Taufiqurrahman to express his gratitude to Sudibyo Markus for his dedication to the humanitarian mission alongside Muhammadiyah. “Thank you, Pak Dibyo, for your tireless efforts in carrying out humanitarian missions with Muhammadiyah,” expressed Agus.
