MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA — Chairperson of Muhammadiyah Agus Taufiqurrahman highlighted the organization’s longstanding commitment to providing healthcare services. He emphasized that Muhammadiyah dedication to healthcare predates Indonesia’s independence.
“Our first healthcare service was established on February 15, 1923, in Yogyakarta, inaugurated by Ahmad Dahlan himself. A year later, our second branch was founded in Surabaya, pioneered by dr. Soetomo. These services have existed long before Indonesia’s independence,” recounted Agus in his welcoming remark at the 53rd anniversary of RS Islam Jakarta Cempaka Putih on Tuesday (June 25).
Agus mentioned that the underlying purpose of Muhammadiyah healthcare endeavors is to foster a healthier society and nation. He quoted K.H. A.R. Fachruddin, asserting that all Muhammadiyah institutions, regardless of their form, serve as the organization’s contribution to the community and the nation.
“As Prof. Haedar Nashir has said, Muhammadiyah’s love for the nation is not expressed through empty slogans, but through providing the best possible services to ensure Indonesia’s progress. Therefore, this commitment should be continuously upheld,” Agus added.
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit Indonesia, Muhammadiyah emerged as one of the most prepared Islamic organizations, readily offering a wide range of essential healthcare facilities. Dozens of Muhammadiyah hospitals, equipped with top-notch infrastructure, actively engaged in patient care and provided free vaccination services.
Driven by a steadfast commitment and unwavering dedication to service, Muhammadiyah has consistently made significant contributions to Indonesia’s healthcare landscape, maintaining, and enhancing the health of the community and the nation across generations. Moreover, the mandate issued during the last two Muhammadiyah Congresses (Muktamar) emphasizes that Muhammadiyah institutions should strive to become centers of excellence in providing the best services.
Agus further emphasized the importance of ensuring that Muhammadiyah institutions, including its hospitals, exert a profound impact on Islamic da’wa. This entails simultaneously presenting excellence and Islamic insights. “May RS Islam Cempaka Putih., which is currently celebrating its 53rd anniversary, continue to operate effectively. We have to remember that Muhammadiyah institutions should become centers of excellence, providing the best services,” said Agus.
