MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BATU — Pancasila is a reflection of the culture and religion that have long been rooted within Indonesian people. President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir mentioned that, even before Pancasila was formally established, religious values were already deeply ingrained in Indonesian society. The various religions in Indonesia have a rich history of interaction and exchange, and all have emphasized the importance of moderation.
“Although Indonesia has diverse religions and the people have unique histories and backgrounds, they have found a way to coexist peacefully. Pancasila, whether consciously intended or not, reflects the awareness of religious people,” said Haedar at the National Seminar organized by the Indonesian Missionary Foundation (YPPII Batu), East Java, on Thursday (July 4).
Haedar argued that recognizing the role of religion in the constitution is a natural consequence of Indonesia’s history and the wisdom of its founding figures. Religion has always been a vital part of Indonesian life, shaping the nation’s core values and guiding its course.
“Those who oppose the compatibility of religion and Pancasila demonstrate a fundamental misunderstanding of both religion and Indonesian history,” said Haedar.
In addition to religion, Haedar highlighted the importance of culture in shaping the national identity. He emphasized that Pancasila, religion, and culture are all essential pillars that support a strong and unified Indonesia. These three components, when nurtured and implemented together, can ensure that Indonesia remains united, just, prosperous, and strong.
Haedar warned that neglecting these core values could lead Indonesia down a dangerous path. “Even if Indonesia achieves its advancement, it will be hollow and meaningless without the foundation provided by these three pillars. As Soepomo said, the independence of Indonesia wasn’t just about physical liberation; it was about creating a nation with a soul, a soul nourished by religion, Pancasila, and our national culture,” said Haedar.
Furthermore, according to Haedar, political divisions escalating ideological differences only lead to weakening the nation. Haedar urged all Indonesians to embrace the unifying values embodied in Pancasila. Pancasila, as the state’s foundation, becomes not only a unifying ideology but also as a powerful force that binds together a diverse Indonesian population.
Haedar advised that Pancasila as a manifestation of the culture and religion of this nation should continue to be preserved. By upholding these core values, Indonesia can ensure its continued progress and development while staying true to its national identity. Haedar urged all elements of Indonesian people to join hands in protecting these values and working towards a just, prosperous, and harmonious future for the nation.
