MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – Universitas ‘Aisyiyah (Unisa) Yogyakarta has been chosen to host the Global Conference on Women’s Rights in Islam (GCWRI). This prestigious event is seen as a golden opportunity to boost confidence in Indonesia’s potential to emerge as a leading center for Islamic studies in the world.
“We may not feel inferior. Indonesia has the potential to make significant contributions to this field, independent of the Middle East,” said Prof. Siti Syamsiyatun, Chairperson of the ‘Aisyiyah Department of Research and Development at the press conference of the GCWRI on Monday (May 13).
rof. Syamsiyatun, fondly known as Bu Syam, emphasized the importance of confidence among progressive Muslim women. She believes their interpretations of Islam can be a powerful tool for advocating for women’s rights around the world.
Bu Syam pointed to a stark contrast between Indonesia and many Muslim-majority countries. In those countries, women’s rights are still severely restricted. Basic rights, such as access to education and leadership opportunities, remain out of reach for many women.
“Fortunately, these limitations are not present in Indonesia, especially within Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah,” Bu Syam said.
One particularly controversial issue for women in Muslim countries is female circumcision. This practice often has negative health consequences, both in the short and long term.
“Muhammadiyah has taken a clear stance against female circumcision. Hence, it’s crucial to share this message with the world, not just in Indonesia but also through Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah branches abroad,” said Bu Syam.
The Global Conference on Women’s Rights in Islam (GCWRI) presents a valuable opportunity for Muhammadiyah and ‘Aisyiyah to advocate for their views. The conference also has the potential to attract educators and researchers interested in studying ‘Aisyiyah. Bu Syam even proposed that Unisa Yogyakarta offer scholarships to international students, encouraging them to pursue further education at the university.
