MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, JAKARTA – In a warm halalbihalal (post-Ramadan) gathering hosted by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education on Tuesday, April 8, Chairperson of Muhammadiyah, Agus Taufiqurrahman, delivered an inspiring message about the value of human connection.
Agus emphasized that face-to-face gatherings hold a unique meaning that cannot be replaced by texting or virtual greetings.
“Meeting people in person like this after Eid can’t be substituted with a virtual meeting via social media. Sometimes we just can’t visit relatives, but direct interaction is what truly brings people together. That’s where the real joy of togetherness lies,” he said.
Agus highlighted a well-known teaching from the Prophet Muhammad about the blessings of keeping good relationships.
“The Prophet said that those who want to live longer and receive more blessings in life should maintain their ties with others,” said Agus.
Research on the Power of Face-to-Face Interaction
Agus also pointed out that this value isn’t just a religious concept. It has been supported by science. He mentioned a famous long-term study from Harvard University published around 2016–2017, which engaged 724 people for decades to find out what contributes most to a happy, long life.
“By the end of the study, only about 60 participants were still alive. What the research found was that strong social connections and meaningful interactions were the most important factors in a happy and healthy life,” he explained.
He shared another example from a village in Italy where most of the residents are over 100 years old. Researchers found that frequent social interaction and strong community bonds played a major role in their health and longevity.
“An in-person meeting can’t be replaced by gadgets,” Agus added. “We often think sending a short message is enough, but the real meaning of connection can only be felt when we meet in person.”
He concluded by encouraging everyone to make the effort to stay connected and build meaningful relationships.
“If the Prophet teaches us to maintain our ties and science confirms its benefits, then let’s not miss any chance to strengthen our bonds. That’s where true blessings in life begin.”
For Agus, the gathering is more than just a post-Ramadan tradition. It’s a powerful way to live a more meaningful and joyful life, both personally and as part of a caring community.
