Rupi E2-2023: A Leap Forward in Indonesian Missile Technology

MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – The Center for Research on Innovation and Technology (CIRNOV) of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (UAD) and PT Dahana made significant strides in Indonesia’s defense capabilities with the successful retesting of the Merapi missile system (Rupi E2-2023). Conducted from December 1st to 3rd, 2023, at the Air Weapon Range (AWR) of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) in Pandanwagi, East Java, the test evaluated critical aspects like targeting techniques, missile safety, targeting accuracy, and overall performance.

Professor Hariyadi, Head of the CIRNOV of UAD, underscored the team’s unwavering commitment to continuous improvement. “Refinement is an ongoing process for us to ensure the Rupi E2-2023 meets the stringent standards of the defense and security industry,” said Hariyadi.

The improved missile boasts substantial advancements from its predecessor. The launch mechanism has transitioned from a rail system to a tube, facilitating easier pre-firing fin deployment. Additionally, manual aiming has been enhanced through the integration of digital telescopes, enabling effective targeting both day and night. Notably, the design represents the team’s independent ingenuity, distinct from any form of reverse engineering.

The Rupi E2-2023 incorporates cutting-edge technology like night vision to swiftly acquire and lock onto aerial targets, including aircraft and drones. Furthermore, a long-range telescope provides missile gunners with enhanced targeting comfort, regardless of the lighting conditions.

Designed as a man-portable air defense system (MANPADS), the Merapi excels in pursuing and eliminating airborne threats. Refined targeting accuracy minimizes susceptibility to countermeasures like decoy objects, ensuring pinpoint engagement.

Beyond CIRNOV and PT Dahana, the test witnessed the participation of esteemed reviewers from various institutions, including the Center for Science and Tecnology ode Defense of the Ministry of Defense, Fast Movement Troops Command of TNI AU, Dislitbangad, and Poltekad Kodiklat TNI AD.

While a thorough analysis of the test data is ongoing, the preliminary results inspire optimism. The CIRNOV team expresses confidence that the Rupi E2-2023 will surpass the set benchmarks and potentially be adopted by the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) for safeguarding national sovereignty.

The Merapi missile’s advancement represents a significant milestone for Indonesia’s defense industry. Its potential integration into the TNI arsenal signifies substantial progress towards self-sufficiency in national defense capabilities.
