MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, MALANG – Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah, Muhammadiyah martial arts, has made a significant contribution to Indonesia’s overall success at the 2024 ASEAN University Games. The team secured six gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal in Pencak Silat, the traditional Indonesian martial art.
This remarkable achievement accounts for nearly half of Indonesia’s total medal count in Pencak Silat. With a combined total of 13 gold medals, five silver medals, and six bronze medals, Indonesia emerged as the overall champion in this sport.
“This success is the result of a long journey and the support of many individuals,” expressed Nur Subekti, the coach of the Indonesian Pencak Silat national team for the ASEAN University Games, on Saturday (July 6).
Subekti, who is also a member of the Muhammadiyah Department of Sports Development and the Head of the Physical Education Program at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), emphasized the importance of continuous development in Muhammadiyah’s educational sports programs.
“We need to strengthen support for physical education programs in various Muhammadiyah universities. This includes specialized sports classes in Muhammadiyah schools and various Muhammadiyah sports associations,” said Subekti.
The outstanding performance of Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah athletes has opened doors for exciting future prospects. Their achievements are expected to be a major factor when selecting and monitoring athletes for the upcoming SEA Games national team. Additionally, these champions could be invited to compete in prestigious international competitions such as the SEA Games and the World Championships.
Indonesia proudly hosted the 21st ASEAN University Games, the most prestigious sporting event for universities in Southeast Asia. Held across various locations in East Java from June 25 to July 6, 2024, the games brought together athletes from across the region.
Indonesia secured its dominant position as the overall champion of the ASEAN University Games by Thursday (4/7). The nation’s impressive medal tally at that point stood at 100 gold medals, 79 silver medals, and 53 bronze medals. This unyielding lead remained unchallenged throughout the rest of the games, solidifying Indonesia’s place at the top of the leaderboard.
The ASEAN University Games, held every two years, feature athletes from universities across Southeast Asia. This edition of the games featured competitions in 21 different sports. The venues for these competitions were spread across nine locations in Malang and Surabaya, with the Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) Dome serving specifically as the venue for Pencak Silat.
