MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, BANYUMAS – The establishment of Muhammadiyah marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of Islamic knowledge, according to Saad Ibrahim, Chairman of Muhammadiyah. Ahmad Dahlan, the movement’s founder, led this transformation by embracing an approach that transcended mere reliance on religious texts.
Speaking at a public lecture on Sunday evening (February 25) at the Zam-Zam Modern Islamic Boarding School in Banyumas, Central Java, Saad highlighted the unique approach employed by Ahmad Dahlan in establishing Muhammadiyah. While acknowledging that there’s no explicit command in the Quran or Hadith to establish a da’wa organization, Saad explained that Dahlan’s vision was grounded in a deeper understanding of Islamic principles. This foundation was further strengthened by the founder’s commitment to knowledge and science.
“Dahlan’s approach went beyond simply referring to religious texts,” Saad emphasized. “He firmly anchored his actions in these texts but also drew strength from knowledge and science. This is evident in his efforts to determine the accurate direction of the qibla (direction of prayer) at the Masjid Gedhe Kauman (Kauman Grand Mosque).”
Dahlan’s innovative approach extended beyond theoretical knowledge. His establishment of orphanages, hospitals, and other Muhammadiyah institutions served as practical manifestations of his interpretation of the Quran. Although there is no specific Quranic verse directly commanding the establishment of orphanages, Dahlan’s actions reflected his understanding of the Quran’s emphasis on compassion and social justice.
Saad described the scientific approach employed by Muhammadiyah through its initiatives as being firmly rooted in religious principles. This unique blend has garnered praise from scholars of diverse backgrounds, including renowned scholar Robert W. Hefner, who lauded Muhammadiyah education system as the world’s best Islamic model.
Saad attributed Dahlan’s unique perspective to his extensive scholarly journey. The founder actively engaged with scholars across local, national, and international levels, enriching his understanding of Islam. Yet, throughout his intellectual pursuits, Dahlan remained firmly rooted in his Islamic identity. Through the establishment of Muhammadiyah, he translated Islamic teachings into tangible actions that benefit the broader community.
Dahlan’s legacy continues to inspire Muhammadiyah ongoing efforts to remain at the forefront of Islamic knowledge and social progress. By combining religious principles with scientific knowledge and a dedication to social action, Muhammadiyah continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future of Islam in Indonesia and beyond.
